The kids receive a cryptic phone message from their mother warning them that they are not safe and not to trust. And they still miss their parents, who are off on an agricultural trip studying soybeans. Newt's neighbor Julie is busy trying to replace the garden gnomes that the kids and Uncle Newt's inventions keep destroying. ![]() Uncle Newt is busy trying to perfect his latest invention, which is a vacuum cleaner powered by rotten fruit. Their friends Silas and DeMarco always find some sort of crazy stunt to attempt, and this time it is riding a bike down a slide and then jumping it over a mud pit that they have dug in the backyard. ![]() ![]() ![]() And rather than glorifying scientists as idealized heroes, she tells true stories about real people-men (and some women) who needed to earn their living, who made mistakes, and who trampled down their rivals. Instead of focussing on esoteric experiments and abstract theories, she explains how science belongs to the practical world of war, politics, and business. We see for instance how Muslim leaders encouraged science by building massive libraries, hospitals, and astronomical observatories and we rediscover the significance of medieval Europe-long overlooked-where, surprisingly, religious institutions ensured science's survival, as the learning preserved in monasteries was subsequently developed in new and unique institutions: universities. Sweeping through the centuries from ancient Babylon right up to the latest hi-tech experiments in genetics and particle physics, Fara's book also ranges internationally, challenging notions of European superiority by emphasizing the importance of scientific projects based around the world, including revealing discussions of China and the Islamic Empire alongside the more familiar stories about Copernicus's sun-centered astronomy, Newton's gravity, and Darwin's theory of evolution. In Science, Patricia Fara rewrites science's past to provide new ways of understanding and questioning our modern technological society. ![]() ![]() ![]() I Want to Sleep Under the Stars! I blew through each of the three books in the trilogy, and I’m kicking myself for not reading them earlier. So, after I reviewed Liu’s novel Ball Lightning for The Verge, they were books that I picked up right away, to revisit that world. I’ve begun work on a new project for The Verge, and along with the stories that I had been listening to, I decided to go back to The Three-Body Problem and its sequels, which had been sitting on a shelf for a couple of years, books that kept telling myself that I’d pick up eventually. (In particular, “ The Wings of Earth” by Jiang Bo, “ Farewell Doraemon” by A Que, “ Your Multicolored Life” by Xing He, and “ To Fly like a Fallen Angel,” by Qi Yue) I’ve read stories from the China before: I wrote a post for Barnes and Noble about the history of Chinese science fiction, and through Ken Liu’s anthology, Invisible Planets, and of course, Cixin Liu’s The Three-Body Problem (which I reviewed for Lightspeed Magazine a couple of years ago.) To keep myself on track and entertained, I began listening to a string of Clarkesworld Magazine’s podcasts - their fantastic translations from China. I dipped my toe into the world of Chinese science fiction over the course of this summer, as i did a bit work on my home. ![]() ![]() ![]() The prompt detection of changes and anomalies is often a primary concern, as they provide precious information for understanding the dynamics of a monitored process, and for activating suitable countermeasures.
